A recent survey carried out by The Workchoice Trust asking respondents "what career advice would you give your 18-year-old self" revealed that more than half of New Zealand professionals would turn back the clock and change their career paths if they could. 79% said they had poor access to careers advice at high school and a further 82% said they didn't have a clear understanding of their chosen career path at the time of leaving school or graduating.
How can we assist students in making the first step in deciding on possible career paths?
Research shows that first experiences of the labour market have a profound impact on later working life. A smooth transition from school to work lays the foundations for a good career. Workchoice Day 2012 is your chance to inspire, captivate and motivate students and expose them to the opportunities in your industry.
Recent media have emphasised that youth have been one of the hardest hit in the current unemployment market. Reports on continuing slow economical growth and job uncertainty have had a major impact on students at secondary school level. Careers Advisors across the country have been reporting that students are thinking much more carefully about their next step. They are also saying that programmes such as Workchoice Day are even more crucial at times like this.
As a hosting company you have the opportunity to host up to 40 students (20 students per session) on Workchoice Day and help our future workforce go a long way.
The standard programme works to the following schedule:
Morning visit: 10.00am - 11.45am.
Lunch: 11.45am - 12.15pm
Afternoon visit: 12.45pm - 2.30pm
This can be adapted to suit your organisation.
These students have been selected by their school due to their interest to pursue a career in your relevant industry. Although your company may not hire school leavers, Workchoice Day provides you with the opportunity of planting a seed with New Zealand's future workforce and strengthening your employer branding.
The Workchoice Trust provides planning guides offering suggestions on how to structure the visits aiming to meet student and your own expectations. We also offer a planning workshop prior to the day to answer questions and support you through the process.
Workchoice Day is designed to allow students to see jobs in action and ask questions, it is not work experience so therefore does not require the same level of commitment from your staff.
Established as a not-for-profit organisation, the Trust receives no Government funding, therefore relies on the financial support of partners and hosting organisations. Hosting fee packages are 100% tax deductible.
